5 Ways To Celebrate Earth Day

Earth Day is April 22nd, and was established in 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson as an effort to raise awareness on environmental issues. It encourages people to pause and reflect on the issues at hand, therefore inspiring people to conserve and protect our planet. Today, we’re looking at some ways that you can give back to our planet on Earth Day, and hopefully, every day. Here are 5 ways that you can celebrate Earth Day!

5. Outdoor Meditation/Yoga

Take some time to unwind from classes and be one with nature. Whether it’s in the mountains somewhere nearby or in our lovely SSU Butterfly Garden, connect with nature through deep breathing exercises. Use this time to reflect and gain clarity as you appreciate all that this planet has to offer.

4. Dry Your Clothes Outside

Think about how much energy you’ll conserve if you choose to dry your clothes outside! There are also many benefits to this, including the Earth’s UV light that disinfects the clothing and clothes tend to last longer if they are hung to dry outside. This also allows you to soak up the sunshine, which can greatly boost your mood.

3. Learn How To Identify Trees

Look around you… we are lucky to have so many trees around us. But have you ever wondered the species of the tree? Learn how to identify trees by picking up a local tree ID guide and taking an observation walk. Check out some nearby places that have online ID guides as you examine bark texture, leaf shapes, and more. The trees will feel SO appreciated!

2. Clean Up Your Local Environment

You can look for nearby organizations who do local cleanups OR… you can grab a trash bag and go out on your hand! All you need is a trash bag, a place to clean, and a dream. It may seem like a small action, but the benefits are endless and so needed for our planet.

1. Support Your Local Farmer’s Market

Not only are you supporting local farmers, but you are avoiding “fossil fuel intensive transport” by land, sea, and air. Your fruits and veggies will be so much fresher and more sustainable. SSU often takes Getaway Trips to the Saturday Farmers Market nearby, so check out our website to join us!

SSU’s Earth Day Plant Sale

The Biology Graduate club is holding an Earth Day Plant Sale from April 22-24, 10AM -3 PM in Darwin Lobby. Invest in plants that are hand-grown by members.
